Internet and text message services will remain suspended across
Nagaland as protests spread in the state against the lynching of a
rape-accused man in Dimapur. Police arrested 18 people after going
through the video clippings of the incident.
The authorities put a freeze on Internet last night after videos related to the lynching Dimapur surfaced on the net.
No evidence has, however, been found that officials at the Dimapur Central Prison were complicit in the mob breaking into the jail, Nagaland Inspector General (Range) Wabang Jamir told NDTV.
Highly placed officials had told NDTV that there is a strong suspicion
of the "complicity of policemen" in the mob breaking into the jail and
dragging out the man, Syed Sarif Uddin Khan.
"There has been no evidence to suggest the complicity of jail staff, but we will keep this point in mind," Mr Jamir said. "Curfew is still on and there is no movement of vehicles or people... We are in the process of identifying more people and we can expect several more arrests in the coming days," he added.
Protests against the lynching continued to rock many parts of Nagaland. Protests were also held at Assam's Karimganj, Khan's hometown. Khan's body was taken to Karimganj yesterday.
Khan had been arrested on charge of raping a woman in Dimapur on February 24, and was sent to the Dimapur Central Jail the next day after he was remanded in judicial custody.
On March 5, a mob broke into the jail, dragged Khan out, stripped and beat him up, tied him to a motorcycle and dragged him for 7 km towards the centre of Dimapur town. He died of his injuries along the way. The mob then hung his body from a clock tower.
